ISSUE 42:
Motivation can be helpful, what are the types we can use?
Welcome to the 42st issue of the ABS newsletter! We’ve discussed in previous audio portions some of the drivers of progress. One of those is motivation (often referenced as a less ideal driver than discipline). These are really just 2 modalities with different strengths and weaknesses. That being said we will discuss motivation today, the types and then expound upon how each of these can be used and leveraged/modified in your best interest.
Motivation, a key driver of human behavior, can be categorized broadly into two types: internal and external.
Internal Motivation: This form of motivation, also known as intrinsic motivation, originates from within the individual. It is driven by personal satisfaction or the pleasure of engaging in a task. For instance, a person may engage in painting simply because they enjoy it, or study a subject out of sheer interest and curiosity. This type of motivation is often linked to higher levels of satisfaction and long-term commitment to activities.
External Motivation: External, or extrinsic, motivation, on the other hand, involves external factors influencing one's behavior. These can include rewards like money, recognition, grades, or the fear of negative consequences like punishment or criticism. For example, an employee might work hard to receive a bonus or a promotion, or a student might study to get good grades. This type of motivation is effective for specific, short-term goals but may not sustain engagement over the long term as intrinsic motivation can.
In summary, while internal motivation is fueled by personal interest or pleasure, external motivation is driven by the pursuit of rewards or the avoidance of negative outcomes. Both forms play vital roles in different contexts and understanding their dynamics can be crucial for effectively motivating oneself and others. Lets discuss further in the audio portion.
