ABS Audio Newsletter: Collagen Protein
Issue 24: Latest study discussion and current recommendations.
ISSUE 24:
Is collagen protein beneficial for joint/connective tissue health or should we save our money?
Welcome to the 24th edition of the ABS audio newsletter. Today we dive into a topic that has become more frequently discussed in the fitness space. That topic is collagen protein. This supplement has become more popular with folks over the last several years with purported joint, skin, and hair benefits.
Firstly, as we know, when claims are made we are required to analyze the evidence of those claims. In this case we have a new study which directly looks at the efficacy of connective tissue synthesis generated from collagen supplementation. The study compared collagen with whey protein and their effects on both muscle protein synthesis and connective tissue synthesis.
TLDR: Whey vs. Collagen
Absorption/Digestibility: Advantage Whey
Stimulation of Muscle Protein Synthesis: Advantage Whey
Stimulation in Connective Tissue Synthesis: Push (Neither stimulated CTS to any meaningful degree).
Attenuation of Lean Tissue Loss: Advantage Whey
Overall Amino Acid Profile: Advantage Whey
