ABS Audio Newsletter: Building Greater Margin for Indulgences
Issue 59: How can we add more physical activity into our lives?
Welcome to the 59th issue of the ABS Audio Newsletter! I just returned from a bachelor party cruise over the weekend. On this trip my friends and I had significant availability of adult beverages and delicious food. Did I indulge in these practices? Yes, I certainly did (was a great time with my buddies).
So how off track did I get after having this more gluttonous trip? According to the scale, absolutely none. I weighed the same as I did prior to the trip. How is this possible with food and drink consumption on a cruise? The answer is increased daily energy expenditure (more physical activity). How can you add more into your life to allow for greater margin for indulgences? Let’s outline some ideas!
1. Walking More
Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
Park further away from your destination to add more walking.
Walk or bike to nearby places instead of driving.
2. Active Commuting
Cycle or walk to work if possible.
Get off public transport a stop earlier and walk the rest of the way.
3. Incorporate Exercise into Routine Activities
Do household chores like vacuuming, mopping, or gardening.
Stand or walk while talking on the phone.
4. Structured Exercise
Join a gym or a fitness class that you enjoy.
Schedule workout sessions in your calendar to make them a priority.
5. Use Technology
Use fitness apps or devices like pedometers and smartwatches to track and encourage activity.
Follow online workout videos at home.
6. Active Breaks
Take short breaks every hour to stretch or walk around if you have a desk job.
Incorporate brief exercise routines like desk yoga or simple stretches.
7. Engage in Sports and Recreational Activities
Join a sports team or club, such as soccer, basketball, or tennis.
Participate in recreational activities like hiking, dancing, or swimming.
8. Make Social Gatherings Active
Plan activities with friends that involve movement, such as walking in the park or playing a sport.
Organize family outings that include physical activities, like a day at the zoo, or an amusement park.
9. Incorporate Activity into Leisure Time
Practice hobbies that require physical movement, like gardening or DIY projects.
Take up active hobbies like geocaching, birdwatching, hiking or photography.
10. Use Active Transportation
Use a standing desk or a desk treadmill if available.
Choose to walk or cycle for short trips instead of driving.
